Lie to Me: Detecting Lies

Just about 2 months ago, I read a few Researches on lying, including Men Lie six times a day and twice as much as women, people lie more on the phone than by email and today while searching for those articles to link them for you, I read, people lie more in email than handwritten letters. The latter two didn't surprise me any bit. In fact, I'd have told you so before reading these. Although it's easier to lie in email, people certainly lie more on the phone. I'm sure there are more reasons but one reason is that many lies are told when replying instantly. When people have time to think, they consider that the truth won't hurt. When they have to reply instantly, sometimes they lie to save themselves even if the offence is small.

I've found a sudden interest in catching lies through TV series Lie to Me. I started watching it about a week ago. Some of the reasoning given in the show about catching lies made me wonder if that happens in reality too. Today, I looked it up on Wikipedia and found many things related to it, notably, Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit in the Marketplace, Politics, and Marriage, Third Edition on which the show is based. I read some pages on Amazon for free already. The writer, psychologist Paul Ekman, says that psychologists and psychiatrists are no better than other people in detecting lies. And you don't need any training to detect them either. Of course, not all lies can be caught. The thing about lying is that if you lie a lot, the people you lie to, are more likely to doubt you. But if you lie a lot, you practice lying which makes you a better liar. Though I think lying a lot helps the lie catcher more than liars.

Lie to Me is interesting but given how humans feel and think while watching TV, we are far more likely to learn from a book than the TV series, which is fictional anyway. But hey, there are ways to learn from everything. The best thing considering them, analysing everything, not just reading and watching.

People always say that acting is about wearing masks. I say, no, it's not about wearing masks, it's about revealing them. When I've nothing to reveal, when I'm completely naked, I'd stop acting.

The title must have left you wondering why I'm calling him a snake if you are unfamiliar with Chinese zodiac. Now, don't be put off, this post is more about the life of Shahrukh Khan than Chinese zodiac. About a week ago I watched the first part of Living with a Superstar: Shahrukh Khan on TLC (formerly Discovery travel & living). And the second part a few days ago. I've liked the guy from the day I first saw him till now. No one in Bollywood comes close. In the recent years, I have moved away from Bollywood and closer to Hollywood and British movies. I've not liked most of the Bollywood movies I've seen in the past few years much. But, I've still enjoyed Shahrukh Khan's films and some of Aamir Khan. The liking goes back to his early days. When his first film, Deewana was released, I was only a year old so obviously didn't watch it at that time. But I did watch it and many others. He was great in his third movie, Chamatkar too. At that time, actors stayed away from negative roles, fearing about the image it would create. But Shahrukh Khan's negative roles in Darr and Baazigar are what brought him to the limelight. And everybody loved Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I watched them on the theatre with my family. And many other Shahrukh films before and after that, including Duplicate. Naturally, I loved his pairing with Kajol and even now, no actress comes close to her for me.

But behind this successful side of him, is a lonely person. Yep, snakes are lonely. My first notion of snakes was that they are unhappy and lonely. But it changed when I found out that Shahrukh Khan is a snake. But the second part of Living with a Superstar made me realise that he too, is lonely. He says that he doesn't struggle with acting, which we already know. What we don't know is that he struggles with reality, which he said himself. Acting comes naturally to him but even without trying, he becomes the character. While doing My Name Is Khan, he became Rizwan Khan and I saw that he shed a tear or two, after a shot during the filming of the movie. And said that off-sets, he became sad, started finding sadness in things he normally wouldn't. He says that after the shooting of the movie completes, he washes away the character of the movie while taking a shower. I had thought about this but in a different way. I had thought that actors might behave like one of their characters and get confused about what they are in reality. But Shahrukh Khan has actually spoiled his real life because of acting. Though I'm not suggesting that he must have chosen a different career. He says that it's fun for him, it's like a video game to him. This tells you that there is far more to a person and especially celebrities than you think.

Blogger to Wordpress.com?

I really don't understand why anyone would wanna do that. Yeah, Wordpress is probably the best software for blogging but wordpress.com lags behind. You can't edit the html, you can't place ads, in fact, ads might be placed on your site but someone else will take the revenue. From my experience, I can say it drove me crazy - deciding between blogger, worpress and wordpress.com though the pendulum barely shifted to wordpress.com. But it still benefited me in a way. From wordpress.com, I got the design for England Cricket Blog. There are some good templates there, you won't get them for blogger directly from wordpress.com but some sites have their blogger version.

Does Your Family Need You?

A lot of people spend less time with family for a lot of reasons. One being technology. Technology is enjoyable and can help you learn but only to an extent. You need to take some time off technology to spend more time with family. Another reason is work. Working overtime does not always benefit. What are you doing it all for? Yeah, your kids need it for their education, hobby classes, musical instruments etc. but don't they need your time more than that? It is essential for human mental well-being to talk to people and I'm not talking about talking online. Give them the touch, the hug, smell the flowers, look at the sky, go for a walk, eat chocolate together and laugh on meaningless things. The right way to live is not by spending all your time on technology. You don't want your child to turn 17, leave home and tell you there is no use of staying with you anyway because you are always at work. Or feel guilty about never giving your parents enough time because in your teens you were always on your IPod or computer? People can get a lot closer than they think. Even if your sibling or parent is annoying, eating out or playing with them can still be fun and issues can be resolved usually.

Blogger to Wordpress: A Gloomy Affair

After reading Daniel Scocco's Make money blogging, I decided that I'd separate England cricket from my views about other things. Daniel has also written about the Wordpress software (not Wordpress.com) which requires your own domain I think. Somehow, I went straight to Wordpress.org instead of Wordpress.com, read lots about the software, what wordpress is and blogging basics and then I felt like I wasted my time, not totally though. It's just that I don't have time to read about things which may not benefit at the moment. Reading all that will not go waste for me as in a few months, I'll probably buy my own domain unless I lose interest in blogging. Articles titled "Blogger vs Wordpress" will tell you that Wordpress is better than Blogger, They'll also tell you that people say Wordpress blogs look more professional, I agree. You must have visited many Wordpress blogs without even knowing that you are visiting a blog. Some of the articles that I read about Blogger vs Wordpress were posted some time back, when Blogger had many faults. When I started blogging, I had trouble with the automatic saver, sometimes I had to write some bits again. But blogger has improved. They have fixed the automatic saver. And I'm told that we couldn't schedule posts in blogger some time before I joined. Now, after having read about it, I know that I can move posts from blogger to Wordpress.com, comments and permalink won't be lost. And my blog on Wordpress.com actually looks like a proper website. So what has me hooked to blogger? Well, if my site looks better and/or more professional, hurrah for the readers but I liked the blogger posting page, Wordpress.com might be too sober for me. Though I may just transfer all the posts to Wordpress.com

and stick with it for my site to look better. I've had 3 templates on my blogger blog, the first was installed in Jan 2009, when I first started blogging. It was changed, probably in mid June and the current theme was installed in July I think. It's up to you whether you believe in an insomniac's memory. I like Wordpress.org. All the information about the software has been given very nicely.  I'll use Wordpress software after a few months. It will take me some time to get used to using Wordpress.com instead of blogger. Why Wordpress is better than blogger is also because blogger is owned by Google and Wordpress is an open source project, it's software is free. Blogger is where I got started, it's what introduced me to blogging so I like it but Google has troubled me sometimes. Sometimes, I can log in on Google Adsense and sometimes I can't. I couldn't log in on Google's Feedburner even after trying quite a few times. And I couldn't log in on Google Analytics. It drives me crazy. Also, I spent hours figuring out how to change my name in the "Followers" of others blogs. I could not change it because I could not login on Google Friend Connect for some days. However, Google has always been my favorite search engine.

I might just decide to have only one blog, that on England cricket and for my views about other things, I may just settle for guest blogging! I want to have a separate blog for England cricket and want my blogs to look better and this is not for money. Though I'll probably earn more if I switch to Wordpress.com, I like my blog on blogger, the way it is so I may use the same template even if I switch to Wordpress.com. I have not yet earned a penny from my blog but I'm not complaining, I have not even displayed ads yet. Wondering why I was logging in on Google Adsense? Well when I had just created my blog, on blogger I saw that I can advertise and I thought that my readers would not mind one or two ads in the sidebar but I was told that my blog should be at least 6 months old. After 6 months had passed, I was not interested in displaying ads or money, for that matter. But a few days ago, I wanted to checkout how much Adsense offers and just couldn't log in.

Everything is done, I got 2 blogs. Didn't switch to Wordpress. Most of the articles which compare blogger and Wordpress are about Wordpress.com. I didn't switch because to use the Wordpress software, I not only need a custom domain but I also need a server. Either my own server or something like Apache. And I don't like Wordpress.com for a few reasons. One reason is that I like the layout of the posting, settings etc. pages of blogger and I cannot place my own ads on Wordpress.com. I'm saying "my own ads" because the staff of Wordpress.com can place ads on my site and they'll take all the profit. They'll share it 50/50 if my blog has got 25000 pageviews per month. VIP blogs can place their own ads but that's just too expensive - $1,300 for the setup and then $500/month. That's probably for Newspaper blogs. What's bad is that I can't even decide what kinds of ads they display. Some may annoy my visitors. I had decided to switch to Wordpress software directly rather than Wordpress.com but ain't happening now.

I'm a horse!

I don't like to believe things without considering them and western zodiac seems to be highly inaccurate. Though Chinese Zodiac seems to be true. I'm glad to be a horse and I'll tell you which traits of horse I think I have.

The Horse loves exercise, both mental and physical. You can Spot him by his rapid but graceful body movements, his animated reflexes and fast away of speaking. He responds quickly and can make snap decisions. His mind works at remarkable speed and whatever he may lack in stability and perseverance, he will certainly make up for by being open-minded and flexible. Basically, he is a nonconformist.

Nonconformist.....yes! The first line of this post indicates that.

 The Horse's inconsistency stems from his varying moods. He senses nuances that may go unnoticed by everyone else and he modifies his assessments accordingly. In other words, he goes by the feel of things. Don't ask him to explain his hunches and uncanny deductions. He can't. His is the amazing ability to improvise while the game is in progress. Frequently, he will be playing several games at the same time and be more than able to hold his own. Once he makes his swift decision, he does not hesitate on his course of action. You find him either dashing about doing 101 things or flat on his back from sheer exhaustion. More often than most signs, the Horse finds it difficult to unwind and may suffer from insomnia.

All of the above is true. I've suffered from insomnia in the past and I'm moody as well. Sometimes I figure something out but no one knows how, not even me. Sometimes I'm asked to explain and I try, sometimes I'm able to explain and at other times, not exactly. A few times, I've also "guessed" that someone particular has arrived, without seeing. I still have no idea how I got to know it. Like, when I've figured out something about a person, if I think long and hard about it, I'm usually able to tell what they said which made me feel so. But knowing someone has arrived seems like a complete guess.

She will love crispness, greenness and outdoor sights and sounds. She refreshes herself in a thousand ways. The ocean's roar, the rustle of the trees, the magic of the woods, the majesty of the mountains, will all call to her sense of adventure. When she takes off, she isn't being unfaithful or unreliable. It's just her nature to respond to such exciting stimuli. If you love her and want to keep her, don't fence her in.

Yeah, I love the nature....the sun, the water, the greens. At my place, the best time to go to the terrace and look at the sky is when the sun has just set. A few different colours can be seen exactly where the sun has set, pink, light blue, dark blue clouds, sometimes bits of yellow...yellow and blue give an illusion of green. When the sun shines right after it has rained, the drops on the trees look exotic. Splashing my eyes with water, keeping cotton dipped in cold milk on my eyes, bathing, getting wet in the rain are all great ways to de-stress.

Horses are generally healthy unless they are trapped in. You can't imagine how bad a horse can get if he/she stays in. They are always ready to go out and they can refuse to go out because they are defying and disobedient but they better stay outside. If they are refusing to go out for long, it means something is wrong or they are just being stubborn. If you live with a horse, never trap them in and if you are a horse, flee away from the one who is trapping you in! Being a horse is good, they are normally good for themselves and others but they can be rebellious. Horse type people are proud yet sweet-natured, arrogant yet oddly modest in their approach to love, envious but tolerant, conceited yet humble. They want to belong, yet they are burdened by their need for independence. They need love and crave intimacy yet often feel cornered, pressured. The downsides of being a horse are being moody and hot-tempered.

Visual Aids

Weak eyesight? Well, you got a few options. If you can improve your eyesight naturally, that would be the best but till then, you need visual aids. Here are a few of them:

Glasses
Some people delay getting their eyesight checked because they don't want to wear glasses. This can worsen your eyesight. If your eyesight has just started getting weak, it's a must to wear them, but as less as possible. I'd recommend wearing them only while watching television or while using the computer, reading, sketching and doing similar things. If your eyesight's power is under -1.50 (myopia which is commonly referred as near-sightedness) or +1.50 (hypermetropia) you can probably manage to do other activities and go out without glasses. And always keep your glasses in the cover, when you are not wearing them. I've seen lots of people never ever keep their glasses in the cover, it just leads to the lens of their glasses getting hazy, scratchy and dusty, which stresses their eyes, gives them a headache.

How to decide whether you need to use a visual aid while doing a particular thing
You can do anything without glasses or other visual aids  as long as it doesn't strain your eyes. Do not try to see clearly when you cannot see clearly. If you are near-sighted and there is something far away which is not clear, let it be that way. Eye care professionals (Optometrists, Ophthalmologists and Opticians) will advice you wear glasses/contacts as much as possible but only because most people try to see what they cannot see which results in their eyesight getting worse.

Contact Lenses
A lot of people who wear glasses have a disbelief that wearing and taking contact lenses off is very hectic. At least in my case, I had no problems in inserting them in my eye and taking them off. The only drawback was that I had to cut my index finger nail and thumb nail of my right hand. But I still had to stop wearing lenses because they made my eyes dry. The first one I got were annually disposable. The second ones were monthly disposable. When I wore contact lenses for the first time, I realized that I hadn't seen myself in the mirror clearly without glasses and the first time I wore monthly disposable lenses, I felt that I hadn't seen anything so clearly in 5 years. Yeah, the monthly disposable ones are far better than the annually disposable ones. A few months before I switched to monthly disposable lenses, I got eye drops for dry eye called Refresh Tears which helped a bit. I had always been using eye drops, the daily use eye drops but not the ones for dry eyes. Refresh Tears contains preservatives which can cause irritation to some people and if it does, they must switch to preservative free eye drops. I have not tried daily disposable or other type of contact lenses but as far as I know, there are ones which wouldn't make your eyes dry so I might give them a shot in the future. The cornea of our eye is the only region which receives oxygen directly from air so I think going out for at least half an hour everyday without contact lenses will help if your eyes get dry when you wear contacts. My eyes only used to get dry about after wearing lenses for 4 hours and it just gets worse and worse so it would be best to wear them for only a few hours everyday, of course depending on your contact lenses.

Prescription Sunglasses
Prescription sunglasses look like sunglasses but they work like glasses. And they won't make your eyes dry. I wear them a lot currently. You can visit the optician and choose one of the sunglasses, ask them to change the lens from no power to your eyesight's power or you can bring your own sunglasses and get the lens changed. You can have the lens of the same colour as it was before or get a different colour, any colour or even two colours.

You can have all three of these- glasses, contacts, prescription sunglasses and wear whatever you like. Sunglasses may not help much because you can already see a lot in sunlight, it's fairly easy to go out without any visual aid in the sun. But you could still choose to see 20/20 when you are in the sun. And who said that you can only wear sunglasses while you are in the sun? But I think it's best to be without any visual aid. Your eyes may get dry or your contacts may come out or get damaged if water comes into your eyes.

The Drawback of wearing Glasses/Sunglasses
Sure you know you'll look different in them but have you realised that people might treat you differently because of them? It's weird to have a conversation while wearing sunglasses, eye contact is important. If you are walking down the street, a cute guy/girl looks at you, wouldn't you want to make eye contact? And does the way you look while wearing glasses/sunglasses truly reflect your personality?  

Nightwear Lenses
Orthokeratology is a technique in which you have to wear contact lenses only while sleeping. Insert them in your eye before you go to bed and take them off when you wake up. And Voila! You'll be able to see clearly without glasses/contacts/sunglasses during the day. But you will have to wear them forever or until you wish to see clearly. They have been proven to be better than laser surgery. What I mean is that people who have tried these lenses are more satisfied with the result than the people who have tried laser surgery. But there are ones who have tried laser surgery and they are completely satisfied with the result. The reason why laser can be better than these lenses is that once you get surgery done, if everything goes right, you'll be able to see clearly if you take care of your eyes, if you don't repeat the things which you did to make your eyesight weak. However, once you stop wearing nightwear lenses, your vision will probably go back to what it was before you started wearing those lenses. These lenses work by reshaping the cornea of the eye. When you start wearing these lenses, it can take hours, days, weeks or months to see clearly during the whole day. It usually takes up to a month though. Some people have reported double vision and other vision problems when they start wearing the lenses but this is temporary but keep in touch with an eye doctor. If your vision problems don't go away in a few days, tell your doctor about it. But it is still safer than laser surgery, it does not give you permanent vision defects which laser can. If after laser surgery your vision isn't 20/20 or better, it will probably never reach 20/20. In my personal opinion, you could try nightwear lenses, and while you can see clearly, do eye exercises, and when you stop wearing the lenses, your vision may stay all right, the cornea of your eye may not get back to what it was before you started wearing these lenses or at least better. Or if you find something which can help you in improving your vision naturally, stop wearing the lenses, try the natural therapy.
